When we decided in December 2005 to adopt from China, the wait time was about 8-9 months from the time the parents’ dossier was sent to China until the time that they received their referral. Parents could expect to travel about 8 weeks later. Based on this time frame, we figured that we got our dossier into China this May, we’d be going to China in late spring/early summer 2007.

For reasons that people in the adoption community are still trying to figure out, things have changed a lot since then. Wait times for referrals have slowed down tremendously. If they continue at the current–and projected pace–we won’t get our referral until June or July of 2008, which means we won’t travel to China to get our daughter until August or September of that year. That means a 2 1/2 year wait from now until we can be parents. We’re committed to seeing this thing through, though, so like I said, we have a long road ahead of us…
